Come and visit the studio where she does all her carving and prints from wood. It will be full of slices of tree, large and small. These will either be carved already, and maybe coloured by inks, or they might be odd-shaped, waiting to inspire the artist.
Her inspiration comes from the natural world and from narrative images. A gesture, the turn of the head or the body stretched or crouching can convey mood and meaning, and the use of nature gives many of her images an archetypal setting. Water, birds, plants and the line of a distant hill give the context for many explorations or expressions of the human psyche.
You can examine her techniques, speak to her about her work and ideas, or simply look around. Much of the work is for sale, both carvings and framed and unframed prints. You will have a further opportunity to see the artist’s work during Somerset Art Week when she will be exhibiting in a small group show near Muchelney.
Jane Mowat studied Art History at the Courtauld Instute in London. This was an opportunity to study from the great Museums and Galleries of the Western world – one that she has carried with her since. She discovered her own methods for carving and printing, believing that being self –taught in this area allowed her a freedom and self expression that she might have found difficult if taught conventionally.
For the last 20 years she has lived in Somerset where she lectures part time and exhibits regularly in solo and group shows. She has also shown in the National Print exhibitions at the Mall Galleries in London, as well as the Royal Academies of Art in Bristol and London.
