About the Event
Now in its third year the 10 Parishes Community Carnival brings a fresh, accessible and fun approach to the carnival season. Be it wheelbarrow floats, colourful costumes, stunning structures - all are welcome as long as they are person powered. This year we also aim to bring you the 10 Parishes own carnival band playing instruments or their own creation.

Further Info

The 10 Parishes Carnival started in 2006 to try and return Wiveliscombe to its rightful place as one of the leading carnival centres in the country. Now in its third year local people of all ages and abilities are being asked once again to grab a wheelbarrow, pram, trolley, rucksack, willow, wire, hazel and tissue paper to make a carnival entry and come and take part.

In the last two years Wiveliscombe has been invaded by Daleks, pirate ships, dragons, visions of heaven and hell, animals, arks and much, much more. Participants have ranged from babies in prams to more senior residents practising 'zimmer power'!

Entries can be as simple or complicated as you like. Some have seen whole families slaving for days over the family wheelbarrow. Others have seen youngsters slapping a bit of paint on a cardboard costume a couple of hours before the off. All are welcome and equally valued.

The Carnival Band

To add a special new dimension to the procession this year we are asking you to join us in creating the 10 Parishes Carnival Band. We would like people of all musical abilities who want to enter in the spirit of the carnival, and no matter how good you are, come and join our band. Over the summer Kim McGavin, Charles Donald and Emily Stringer will lead groups of musicians and non-musicians alike. We will create really simple tunes for melody players, simple chords and plenty of percussion. Home made junk instruments welcome. (See Junk Band event for more details).

The 10 Parishes Challenge

Another new flavour in the 2009 procession will be a challenge to each of the 10 Parishes to create a very special carnival entry representing the whole of their parish. We are hoping these large and impressive structures will bring a twinkle of pride to the eyes of local residents as they see their parish challenge for the title "Best in Show".

We are also planning to round off the procession with a small but perfectly formed carnival gala of music and entertainment (see Festival Street Market, and Dance to the Music of Life entries).

So, come along and get involved in a unique event in the heart of your community. No matter how much or how little time you have, how much talent or artistic ability, how much time or equipment, this is one carnival you can be very important part of.

The Route

The procession will assemble in Silver Street from 2.30pm. Please enter from Golden Hill to avoid traffic. The procession will set off at 3pm, making its way through The Square, West Street and onwards to the Recreation Ground for judging, awards and festivities.
