I started sculpting six years ago after attending pottery classes at the Somerset College for Art & Technology in Taunton. I was soon hooked and combined my new found passion for clay with my love of animals. My first large sculpture was of a hare and they continue to be my favourite subject.
I live on the edge of the Brendon Hills and have a small studio with two electric kilns. My main interest is in British Wildlife found in the surrounding countryside. Before sculpting begins a lot of time is spent studying the animal's anatomy and behaviour. This is done mainly from photographs, books, films and by visiting wildlife sanctuaries or if I'm lucky enough, in the wild.
In 2008 I attended a one week masterclass with two acclaimed animal sculptors, David Cooke and Brendan Hesmondhalgh in Yorkshire, and my recent work incorporates some of the new techniques learnt.
Stoneware clay is used for sculpting and after a drying period the pieces are fired to a temperature of 1000°C. Firing takes approximately twelve hours with a further twelve hours for the kiln to cool down before opening. After this initial stage the sculptures are coloured using metal oxides and stains. They are then fired to 1220°C and waxed making them suitable for outdoors. The process from start to finish takes about six weeks. Each piece is entirely hand built so that no two items will ever be identical.
