Two Gentlemen of Soho by A. P. Herbert
Written in 1927 and described by the author as being a “modern take on Shakespeare”. It’s a surreal, blank verse spoof, set in a Soho nightclub after last orders have been called. ‘Modern in 1927’ obviously involves jazz. Shakespeare needs dissembling and confusion, disguise, misunderstanding and lots of high-flown oratory. You’ll get all of that, in spades, with the extra bonus of jokes that are actually funny and language that you’ll understand.
The Crimson Cocoanut by Ian Hay
Described by the playwright as ‘An Absurdity in One Act’, this One Act lifts the lid on seedy Soho life in pre-war London. This buried treasure of a play takes place in a small run-down restaurant and is peopled by a private detective, an irritable old man and his daughter, a disillusioned waiter and two Russian anarchists. It is redolent with references to London omnibuses, Shepherd’s Pie at fourpence and the importance of wearing a hat when out. Prepare to be transported back in time, with some hearty chuckles along the way.
