Further Info

The Recessionists came about as a result of a realisation that with the ebb and flow of contemporary art trends and the mercurial nature of the market, art itself may be the only constant. True art sustains and feeds us all irrespective of upturns and downturns. Therefore the financial value of a piece of art may not represent its true value.

Rather like coming round from a hangover after what must have been a really good party people are trying to sit up and focus on the new, rather grey looking world. The things that appeared rock solid have turned out to be anything but and uncertainty has now become a significant feature in many lives. Art was also swept up in the general hype that characterised the earlier years of this decade. Often becoming simply a commodity to be traded, its value dependent on whether an artist was “in” or “out” rather than truly talented or inspirational.

Despite the art market hype, for many artists the challenges of the current economic downturn have often been an everyday reality. Uncertain whether our work will sell, when and for how much, we worry for our livelihood. You could argue that living in the shadow of such uncertainty acts as a foil for creativity. For us creating art in such an economic climate is a stabilising and truly valuable activity.

Although generally seen in negative terms recession can also create positive challenges bringing new opportunity and can change our perspective on the world. Historically art has been a good investment and in the current climate this still holds true for a significant part of the market. Therefore in some cases an art purchase can be as reliable an investment as gold. However, art is far more than just a vessel for financial speculation, but one that enriches life and inspires us all.

Ostensibly this collective comprises a group of artists united in a common cause – to continue to offer high quality art at competitive prices and the ability to undertake commissions to meet the specific requirements of the individual. We present here a range of styles and mediums to inspire, and encourage you to discuss your desires and requirements such that we can make your vision a reality.
